How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Mahjong Solitaire. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Use the example below to understand a decision. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Practice beyond the first move

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The objective of a round

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Start here and follow along

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

How to use the controls

Tap two free matching tiles. Use the control method described here for this activity. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

Work through an example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Read the matching step again.

Keep this in mind

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Compare the situation with the worked example. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
